Steven Charlot is an Amsterdam-based artist, producer and songwriter with a smooth yet tasteful sound. With roots in alternative R&B and neo-soul, Steven’s music combines soulful melodies and introspective lyrics to create a unique and captivating sound.

Luis Cabrera received a contribution for recording Bach’s first cello suite performed solo on the double bass. A specific performance that follows the music and manuscripts and finds voice in its adaptation to the double bass. Luis Cabrera presents a challenging new vision of this majestic piece by focusing on the sound of a double bass.

Josephine Odhil received a contribution to develop her debut album release show. “Josephine creates surreal dreampop for daydreamers and adventurous listeners: mysterious songs that will take you to a world far away from here.” Her debut album Volatile has just been released on Unexpected Records. On January 27 she celebrated this album release with an interdisciplinary show at Paradiso in Amsterdam.

“Nyala is a trio consisting of Pau Li Liem, Stef Joosten and Jorrit Romme. Just as the name describes (‘Nyala’ is the Indonesian word for “flame”), their music is ever-changing and in motion. It can be smoldering, intense and low in dynamics but it has the ability to grow into fiery improvisations and compositions. Inspired by the unpredictable characteristics of a flame, they strive to find new sounds and explore new ways to interpret their own compositions. The starting point may be an established composition, a pattern or a text but as they begin to play it will evolve into a new impression of the piece. They are not bound to any genre or style but play with an open mind and full of creativity.”

“Intimate Letter transforms Leoš Janácek’s quartet into a new work for violin and live electronics. By taking apart the original to bare materials and rearranging them in an unexpected way, Duo Replica both disrupts and celebrates tradition, to ask new, but no less intimate questions.”

“7 Notations For Piano is a series of short piano pieces that combine the world of contemporary classical music with Jazz harmonies and groovy rhythms. With these musical compositions, Massimo tries to make contemporary classical music more accessible by mixing it with aspects of the jazz genre and adding repetitive rhythmic patterns. In doing so, he limits himself to just one instrument; the piano.”

“Len is a singer/songwriter hailing from Spain. At 24, Len has called many countries her home allowing her to learn and absorb many different cultures even though of her young age. Duality is at the core of Lens project: embracing her roots and taking from her experiences traveling.”

“Peter Somuah is a gifted jazz trumpeter hailing from Accra, Ghana and currently based in Rotterdam. Somuah, who learned to play by listening endlessly to his trumpet heroes Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis, stands out with his warm and melancholic sound, as well as the rhythmic prowess reflecting his upbringing surrounded by the music styles native to West Africa. With this album, that serves as an homage to the tragedies and wonders of this world, he aims to try to get a better understanding of the question: what is our purpose?”

De jonge Amsterdamse band brengt gestreken basmelodieën, energieke
composities en het subtiele gebruik van elektronica samen binnen de klassieke jazzkwintet-bezetting. Gevoelens van absolute gelijkwaardigheid, respect en vriendschap tussen de bandleden vormen de basis voor hun samenspel.

Amarea is the trio led by drummer and composer Eloi Pascual, formed with Chaerin Im and Matteo Mazzù. With strong complicity and deep listening, they serve their urge to improvise by exploring various original pieces.

Keroncong Spektra is a collaboration project between Bintang Manik and Bilawa Respati. They investigate the idioms of Javanese and Sundanese music, Keroncong music, as well as Minimal music. The planned composition utilizes their multi instrument approach: a syncretic mix of their own identity.

Componist en drummer Ruud Voesten schreef muziek aan de hand van Dante Alighieri’s Inferno. Met een bijdrage van het Amarte Fonds neemt hij met zijn band Ambrosia twaalf nieuwe composities op die het verhaal vertellen van de confrontatie met de hoofdzonden en Ruuds eigen reflecties daarbij.

Met eigen teksten en gedichten uit de poëtische nalatenschap van Merals vader, Ali Ihsan Polat, ondernemen ze een transformatieve zoektocht en vertellen ze de vergeten verhalen
met nieuwe klanken, die ons verbinden met de weg naar huis. Koerdische soul muziek; aards, rauw en dicht bij de bron.

Trio Pletenitsa is een vocaal trio bestaande uit Gergana Velikova (BG), Jolien Gebruers (BE) en Sophia Keck (NL). Ze brengen zonder enige begeleiding van een instrument Bulgaarse en Balkan volksliederen. Dissonantie, gekke maatsoorten en oude verhalen zullen je oren verbazen.

Lotte Sarembe is een jonge maker die schrijft voor glazen en zang. Haar Joni Mitchell-esque vocals zijn krachtig maar kwetsbaar, met haar teksten schetst ze heldere beelden vol nuance die worden gedragen door melodieuze lijnen, soprane klanken en een onderlaag van glastonen.

Het Matthias Van den Brande Trio werd opgericht door de bandleider/saxofonist in 2021. De intieme setting van een trio geeft de muzikanten een ongelofelijke vrijheid om nieuwe muzikale ideeën uit te werken. Hun wederzijdse vriendschap en sterke muzikale band vormen hiervoor het fundament.

Somewhere inbetween reality and daydreams Loki wonders around with windy hair and rocky shoes. With the Tea and Dragons choir she creates a poetic landscape with layered vocals, catchy melodies and propelling rhythms. In her music she sings about her search for ‘home’ in a fast moving world.

Voor hun debuutalbum reizen Bo en Siebren van Äktaro diep de natuur van Zweden in om in alle stilte, winterkou en warmte van het haardvuur hun muziek op te nemen. Zo zal de innerlijke rust van Äktaro’s muziek op zijn mooist worden vastgelegd, zodat die Zweedse rust ook in Nederland te horen kan zijn.

Singer-songwriter Chris Egbers maakt een album met songs die hij schrijft naar aanleiding van gesprekken met changemakers: mensen die een negatieve ervaring uit het verleden omzetten in iets positiefs. Met het album wil hij zichzelf en de luisteraar kennis laten maken met onderbelichte verhalen.

Andrea Guterres is a composer and sound artist currently based in Amsterdam. With a specialisation in electroacoustic music and ambisonic soundscapes, her work can be heard in a variety of contexts, including performances, sound installations, and multimedia artworks.

Shiwa is een van Europa’s toekomstige stemmen in de ‘new age’ reggae & dancehall beweging. Zijn Surinaams/Hindoestaans erfgoed maakt hem een uniek fenomeen. Zijn muzikale inspiratie is verweven met zijn culturele achtergrond, die van oorsprong uit de Indiase klassieke muziek is ontstaan.

Might Delete Later is een elektronisch muziekproducerproject van de Amsterdamse producer en songwriter ANNNA. Alle MDL-producties zijn gemaakt van voicemails die door fans, volgers of willekeurige voetgangers van de artiest zijn achtergelaten op een eenmalig mobiel nummer van de artiest.

Isaidtome, the debut EP by Amsterdam based YOUANDI, is a musical compilation of fragments of conversations she has with herself. It is a reflection on her reality, an endless quest and a dance between the conscious and the unconscious.

In Hours of the Whale, Charley Marie reflects on the temporality of life. The intimate song cycle moves between classical chamber music and alternative pop songs. Characteristic are her whispery voice, scenographic lyrics and idiosyncratic guitar playing.

Legiana Collective is een moderne folkband die eigen nummers en folktraditionals van over de hele wereld speelt. De focus ligt op de harmonieuze samenzang van de vier zangeressen, met begeleiding van guarana, viool, cello, mandoline, gitaar, contrabas, diatonische accordeon en percussie.

Visual artist Vincent Rang and pianist Helena Basilova receive a project grant for MONOLITH.

MONOLITH is a mechanical installation in which chemical processes create organic and eternally morphing landscapes, reminiscent of the formation of rock formations, and is accompanied by experimental sounds and dark, drone compositions.

IHAKA krijgt een ontwikkelbijdrage van Amarte. 

Multi-instumentalist/songwriter IHAKA is een talentvolle maker uit Nieuw-Zeeland die inmiddels al vijf jaar in NL woont. Na talloze shows als bandlid en sessiemuzikant is IHAKA klaar om zijn eigen act op te starten. Tegelijk voegt hij invloeden als haka en traditionele instrumenten toe aan zijn act.

Ella John krijgt een projectbijdrage van Amarte!

Op ‘Flows Gaan KO’ kijkt Ella John terug naar de tijden die voor haar donker waren. Ook in de beat keuze is de donkere energie terug te horen. ‘Flows Gaan KO’ is een kleine reis door het bewustzijn van Ella John en een brug tussen wie zij was en wie zij nu is.

Mauro’s songs are direct, lyrical, groovy: instrumental music that everybody can enjoy.
Acoustic instruments such as piano and double bass meet synthesisers, drum machines and dreamy electric guitars.
Improvisations emerge from repetitive drum grooves as a natural consequence of singable themes.

The Hi-Stakes receives a project grant from Amarte.

The Hi-Stakes is an Amsterdam based band that started its activity in 2018. It consists of:

Het duo Penny, bestaande uit Pau Li Liem en Wytske Gratama, krijgt een ontwikkelbijdrage van Amarte.

Het sferische songwriting duo Penny schrijft nummers gebaseerd op de oude sprookjes van Hans Christian Andersen. De sprookjes schetsen een bijzondere wereld vol eigenaardige wezens en mysteries en Penny brengt deze wereld tot leven met hun muziek en neemt je mee in hun beleving van deze verhalen.

T-Shawn krijgt een ontwikkelbijdrage van Amarte.

The Rollerskating Superhero is het nieuwste hoofdstuk van de creatieve duizendpoot T-Shawn. Deze EP gaat over vrijheid (en gebrek daaraan) in coronatijd en hoe jezelf steeds moet blijven ontwikkelen.

Zulu Green krijgt een projectbijdrage van Amarte voor het project Black Queer Magic.

Met Black Queer Magic wil Zulu Green een nieuw geluid geven aan de (Nederlandse) hiphopcultuur. Queerness of homoseksualiteit wordt nog altijd te veel in een negatief daglicht geplaatst in de hiphopscene. Dit geeft een slecht voorbeeld aan jongeren in deze tijd.

Tumult is a new international quintet put together by bassist Matteo Mazzù, featuring some of Amsterdam’s upcoming creative musicians.

Sitting somewhere between a modern jazz band and a postrock act, Tumult’s music combines daring melodies with floating atmospheric landscapes and dualguitar attacks.

Thanks to the Amarte Foundation, Tumult will be able to prepare a completely new repertoire of original music in the coming months. While working to further affirm their band sound, Tumult will also film and
record three of the new pieces in late 2021. Keep an eye out for the release of the videos, and catch Tumult live in 2022!

Lena Hessels will receive a project grant for her live show that supports the release of her album.

Lena: “My goal is to create a stage show with the release of “I LOVE YOU” in which performance art, lighting design and my music merge. I want to be solo on an empty stage and still put on a huge impactful visual show with the intensity of a great pop show; a great light design, on a nihilistic empty stage. That clash seems very interesting to me.”

Laplander is the stage name under which Wouter van Nienes performs his music. His music finds a middle ground between dark soundscapes and dreamy pop music driven by analog synthesizers and drum computers. With the help of the Amarte Foundation, he is currently working on his debut EP which will be released at the end of this year.

Win a concert at the Grachtenfestival in Studio150!

Are you a young musician with a challenging idea that we are looking for? And do you want to play at the famous Grachtenfestival this coming summer? Then do not hesitate and apply for this open call. The Grachtenfestival is collaborating with Amarte Studio Concerts and will organize four concerts both live and online on the 14th and 15th of August. The concerts will take place at Studio 150, which is a beautiful concert hall in the lively area of Amsterdam-Noord and has outstanding recording and streaming equipment. Also, the venue has a beautiful Steinway grand piano. 

Who? Professional, or at a Dutch Conservatory studying musicians, with a maximum age of 31.

What? We are looking for unique collaborations between musicians and interesting crossovers between two or more musical genres. Be inspired by classical music and jazz from all over the world.

How? Send your idea (with a maximum of 200 words), a recent recording and your biography before the 5th of June to l.scholtes@grachtenfestival.nl. A jury of three musical experts from the classical, jazz and world music scene will review the submissions and select a maximum of four concepts.

Which musicians or ensembles will be selected for these (payed) concerts will be announced on the 12th of June.

Allison Wright received a project grant for her project No Take, Only Throw.

My girlfriend and I got a dog last year around the same time that I found my dream Tascam tape recorder on marktplaats. The inevitable happened; I now have an 8 track synth pop album of songs from my dog’s perspective. Having financial support from Amarte will enable me to form a 5 piece band, flesh out the arrangements and record it onto 2 inch tape at the Lullabye Factory.

Jazz band Vondelier received a grant from Amarte for their debut album!

Vondelier is a jazz band with the unusual line-up of vocals, two guitars and double bass. William Barrett writes the music for Vondelier together with Amsterdam poet Mark Opfer. Mark’s lyrical lyrics and Williams jazz compositions are forged into a musical work. In the fall of 2020, Vondelier recorded her debut album in the legendary studio Fattoria Musica. Eight rock-solid pieces of music came to life there. In the summer of 2021, Vondelier will present its first record “Vondelier”.

How do you keep your humanity in an increasingly less human world?

Nothing connects us more than language. We have been read about it, use it to make the best
friendships and express our love with it. After making many trips,
repairing houses together and reading each other poetry, poet Mark Opfer and composer
William Barrett found a symbiosis in music and language. With clear, warm sounds and narrative texts Vondelier creates a world in which you step into a dreamy adventure.

The music is brought to life by Laura Dooge (vocals), William Barrett (double bass), Gijs
Idema & Linus Eppinger (guitar).

Leonard Luka received a project grant from Amarte for the music video for his single ‘Crossfield’.

The clip strengthens the (painful) past between the Netherlands, Indonesia and the Moluccas by means of animated cut-up archive footage.
These images were designed by collage art artist Irie Wata and animator Tessa Rose Jackson.

Arthur Klaassens received a grant from Amarte for his debut album Ratio.

Record for five years, layer by layer; a whole new bass instrument; brand new music and a modern take on old masters. That’s a glimpse into the world of Ratio, the debut CD by oboist Arthur Klaassens.

Bassplayer Thomas Pol received a grant from Amarte for his solo bass album.

Blue Soil is an expression of the melancholy of the sublunary. The sound of the double bass provides depth and core, the compositions vary greatly from each other but come together in the whole.

Görkem Arıkan received a grant from Amarte for his project Singing Sparks.

“Singing Sparks” is a sound installation and a video documentary, emerging from an artistic research co-created by sound artist Görkem Arıkan and car mechanic İbrahim Tokkaya. The project focuses on establishing a close relationship among the artist and car mechanic in order to bring out the use of sound and explore the cultural aspects of listening by researching noise in society and its mediation among diverse backgrounds living on the same land together.

Peter Somuah received a project grant for the development of his album.

Outer Space will be the debut album of jazz trumpeter Peter Somuah. The album will feature a collection of groovy and narrative songs, reflecting Peter’s Ghanaian roots.

Soheil Shayesteh received a development grant for his project Illustrator Kamancheh, in which the kamancheh, live electronics and visuals come together.

‘Illustrator Kamancheh’ is about the further development of a new Audio-Visual instrument (Kamancheh, Live Electronics and Visuals).
Soheil started by studying the physics of the sound of the Kamancheh to learn more about its characteristics and following these studies how to combine the acoustic sound of Kamancheh with the electronics and also how to utilize the data from the spectral analysis of the Kamancheh to add a new dimension to this instrument which is the Audio-Reactive visuals. The visuals are being generated regardless of any timeline and only based on the changes of the spectrum of the sound.

He is now working on a new Audio-Visual album for this unique setting.

Manu van Kersbergen & amp; .multibeat received a development contribution from Amarte for the development of the music performance ‘De herontdekking van de hemel’.

With this project, spoken word artist Manu van Kersbergen investigates the need to rethink our concepts of reality. In collaboration with .multibeat (keyboard player Boudewijn Pleij, bassplayer Thijs van Zutphen and drummer Aron Smit), in-between world consisting of text and compositions they search for a new language to redefine our rapidly changing world. The result will be a 45/60 minute musical performance, in which the spectator is sucked into a sometimes alienating and sometimes recognizable world that is full of explosive word art and confronting stories.

Valvetronic is een 12-koppige brassband uit Amsterdam die in binnen- en buitenland op grote festivals heeft gespeeld. Op dit moment zijn zij, mede dankzij de steun van het Amarte Fonds, bezig met de eindproductie van hun in november 2020 opgenomen debuutalbum!

“Off-Shore is an album project emerged as a spinoff of the film Further than Hip Hop. Xausa’s work draws a parallel between the word of colonial missionaries of the past and the words of nowadays rappers and spoken-word-artists in The Netherlands. In the album, the spoken word artists and musicians, Neusa Gomes, Kevin Josias, Adeiye Tjon, Rik Zutphen, Kiki Luitwieler, Shiva Willem, Jephan Esseboom, and Kenny Gomes, perform the contributions they wrote in response to a series of conversations Xausa initiated about the effects of Dutch colonial history in The Netherlands.”

Muzikant en singer songwriter Veya kreeg een bijdrage van Amarte om haar debuut singles uit te kunnen brengen.

Als producer en violiste onderzoekt Veya hoe viool op vernieuwde wijze kan worden gebruikt in popmuziek. Hierdoor zijn haar elektronische en akoestische geluiden soms niet meer van elkaar te onderscheiden. Ze probeert in haar muziek onze menselijke potenties en worstelingen te ontrafelen en neemt haar luisteraars mee in een wereld vol viool, zang, synths en drums.

Amarte ondersteunt het bijzondere project Across A Spectrum, het eerste soloproject van slagwerker Yoràn Vroom. Met dit project geeft Yoràn de luisteraar inzicht in zijn kijk op maatschappelijke onderwerpen, anders dan de manier waarop men die dagelijks via (nieuws)kanalen krijgt toegediend.

Amarte ondersteunde het project ‘Unlocked’ van Chagall met een projectbijdrage.

Chagall maakt een nieuwe live muziek ervaring waarin zij met sensoren en de beweging van haar lichaam en handen alle elektronische elementen in de muziek bestuurt, terwijl zij tegelijkertijd controle heeft over een immersieve licht-installatie. ‘Unlocked’ is een uiting van het samensmelten van kunstvormen zoals technologie, visuele kunst en choreografie en de verschillende talenten van Chagall en haar team.

Componist en saxofonist Ben van Gelder ontving een ontwikkelbijdrage voor het ontwikkelen en opnemen van solo-repertoire voor altsaxofoon, C-melody en dwarsfluit.

ALBERTINE is het eerste solo-project en tevens de tweede naam van altviolist en componist Yanna Albertine Pelser, die sinds een paar jaar ook haar zangstem heeft ontdekt. Zichzelf begeleidend op de altviool en piano schrijft ze liedjes over wat ze voelt en meemaakt: eind november 2020 wordt haar muziek, begeleid door een band op plaat uitgebracht.

Perforator ontving een bijdrage van Amarte voor het project Performania, waarin zij klassieke instrumenten combineren met elektronische technologie.

Sun-Mi Hong & Alistair Payne forming a duo is almost as predictable as the sun rise. With a long track record playing together in a wide array of projects and as partners who together form the driving force for the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, this pair are extremely sensitive to each others ideals in life, and in music. Quarantine time has sprouted some new roots for this duo; the drive to keep experimenting and expressing the moment showing that art is not optional. The debut album “IN: 人” being the fruits of their labour.

The music is the less predictable aspect to this. Trumpet & Drums is not the most common line-up, however it’s easy to forget you are listening to either of these instruments. Expect breath and footsteps, a woman wailing and a door squeak. Long textural passages that resemble the sandy scrapes of a carpenter’s work bench. The experience is dream like.

RUIS – EEN KWANTUMFYSICA-OPERA-LIBRETTO VOL INFORMATIE

RUIS is een vijfdelige multi-disciplinaire opera, waarbij deel 4 een werk van dertig minuten voor de formatie TRIFID (accordeon, vibrafoon en contrabas) en twee zangers zal zijn. Het Amarte Fonds draagt bij aan de compositie van dit werk, dat geschreven wordt door accordeonist en componist Rik Cornelissen.
