Palimpsestic Landscapes

Danae Io

Palimpsestic Landscapes is the working title of the third short film of a trilogy that poetically reflects on the relationship between people and land across time. In the films, the de-industrialised city of Thebes acts as a stage to consider the violence induced by the formation and maintenance of a national identity. Examining the drawings of Greek landscapes by the British explorer James Henry Skene, between 1838-1845, Palimpsestic Landscapes will reflect on how landscapes can be seen as devices with agency, existing within historical processes, through filmmaking.

Danae Io is an artist working in film, text and sculpture. Danae is a graduate of the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam and Goldsmiths, University of London. Her film Sprouts of a Dragon’s Teeth (2023) premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was screened at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London.
