The Borderland: towards North-West

Nazar Rakhmanov

Nazar Rakhmanov received a grant to develop a new performance. The project The Borderland: toward North-West explores the boundary between theater and film, where one medium can enhance the other. It explores a contemporary fantasy of current geopolitical reality populated with mythical creatures. This project intertwines fictional and real planes to reflect on the topics of migration, identity and border politics.

Nazar is a Tatar-Russian choreographer and dance maker based in Amsterdam. He graduated from the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) of the Amsterdam Academy of Theater and Dance in 2022. Before moving to the Netherlands, he lived in Moscow, where he studied Comparative Religion Sciences, worked as a dance therapy assistant and practiced butoh and physical theater. He creates interdisciplinary immersive performances, merging theater and film. By blending performative elements and "real life experiences" through video, he creates a bridge between the world outside the theaters and those within, adding additional urgency and validity to his artistic proposition.
