Spielplatz speelt in de DSM
Collective Spielplatz received a grant to develop a new theatre performance about the contrast between manual labour and working in an office. After the mines closed 50 years ago, many Limburg miners got stuck between shore and ship. Most of them had to rely on above-ground existence. From miner to office clerk, the fate seemed to be. Those who had spent their lives working with their hands were suddenly spinning around in office chairs. Spielplatz finds itself in front of the former headquarters of the mines. There, peering through the building's windows, they feel equally small and other-worldly. A product of a zeitgeist of flex-working and autonomy, the young collective puts itself in the miners' shoes and asks the question: What is an office? What happens when the intelligible world of manual labour turns into a labyrinth of incomprehensible paperwork?
Collective Spielplatz consists of Neele Kamerbeek, Samuël Hento, Franzi L. Keller, Siem Steinmann, Kedves van den Berg and Merijn P. Kortman. Childlike openness, amazement and wonder are central to their form of research, which tries to assume an uninhibited youthful playfulness. Collective Spielplatz's play and making spaces are found in anti-squat buildings. By building performances in and inspired by premises that are only temporarily available, they constantly force themselves to embrace the time-bound nature of the medium of theatre. In this way, the collective celebrates these premises for and with the community around them.
