I Wanna Tell You Another Story

Isadora Tomasi

Isadora Tomasi received a grant for the development of new work. I Wanna Tell You Another Story (working title) explores the impact of clothing on the gaze of the other, how this influences self perception, and puts the female body at the center, investigating various possibilities of being female. Isadora is intrigued by the idea of making a solo performance that explores gender intricacies, resisting simplistic labels, using electronic music, text, voice looping and physicality to express and investigate the complexity of a body, her body, labeled female at birth, finding its resonance in gender fluidity. Additionally, Isadora is interested in how gender influences our dreams. In collaboration with dream researcher Mala Kline, they plan to study the intersection of gender and dreaming. Can dreams offer truths about society and serve as tools to navigate it? Can these dreams form the foundation for crafting the dramaturgy, space, and materials of a burlesque solo performance? A one woman’s act that isn’t designed to please the male gaze.

Isadora is an Amsterdam-based performance and sound artist. She graduated from DAS Theatre MA in ’23 and has a Bachelor's in Mime from AHK. Her work combines movement, writing and music within the performance setting. Inspired by queer and feminist theorists such as Sarah Ahmed and Paul B. Preciado, Isadora’s work challenges dominant narratives, disrupts societal expectations and explores the unfamiliar. Personal experience plays a significant role in her work: by dwelling in discomfort and self exploration, Isadora seeks to re and de-construct systems that are built on supremacy, violence and power and seeks to create spaces for solidarity. Trying to understand and act in the “macro” seems sometimes huge. She believes that in the micro is where we can escape and hack the system’s repetitive patterns. Through her practice Isadora seeks to explore small but potentially impactful alternatives to these patterns. Isadora works in parallel as sound designer and releases music as YKA.
