Nachtschade

Emma Laura Schouten

Emma Laura Schouten received a grant to write her debut novel Nachtschade, which will be published by Van Oorshot Publishers. Nachtschade is a mosaic narrative featuring a young woman who feels alienated from her surroundings. The illness she suffers from, which sometimes forces her into isolation for days on end, plays an important role in this. By studying the work and life of 17th-century philosopher Anne Conway, the question arises as to what extent an identity is determined by one's physical condition.

Emma Laura writes essays, prose and poetry. Texts of hers have appeared in Het Liegend Konijn, Kluger Hans and on Hard/Head, among others. In her writing, she explores the no man's land between sick and healthy and seeks magical realism in everyday life.
