Kweekje, mi kwekipikin
Nicole Terborg received a grant for developing an interdisciplinary exhibition experience about children who are not raised by their biological parents, but are taken in by relatives or other foster caregivers without institutional involvement. Surinamese people have a word for this: "Kweekje." In the six-part audio series Kweekje, mi kwekipikin, Nicole explored her own kweekje story for the first time and sought out the experiences of other kweekjes. Why is this form of foster care common in Afro-Surinamese Dutch families? Why are questions about it often taboo? And how is this way of raising children connected to the legacy of slavery? The successful podcast series became a starting point for many people in the community to start conversations. More and more kweekje stories are surfacing. Nicole decided to collect and present these stories in an exhibition. Through photography, visual art, and audio from personal and historical archives, visitors are introduced to these stories and the shared history of the Netherlands and Suriname.
