Homesick for Another World

Mei Liu received a grant for the development of Homesick for Another World: a multidisciplinary project combining experimental film, docu-fiction, live performance, and audience participation. It explores lucid dreaming under confinement as a metaphor for finding freedom under oppression and building cross-border solidarity. Based on Mei's two years of artistic research, the project expands beyond its original Chinese context to explore resistance and liberation in other places. Working with collaborators from diverse backgrounds, Mei highlights multiple voices that shape the lucid dreaming experience. The project weaves speculative fiction with unexpected twists and humour.

Mei is a filmmaker, artist, and performance-maker based in Amsterdam. She studied Artistic Research in and through Cinema at the Netherlands Film Academy and was selected by Forecast Platform to work with artist mentor Lieko Shiga. Her video installations have been exhibited at Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (Indonesia) and OneStepForward (China), while her short films have screened at festivals including Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (France). Mei explores new ways of filmmaking that challenge social hierarchies and interactions. She is developing 'film yoga' — a practice that connects filmmaking with political and spiritual insight.
