The Second Lily
Jori(k) A. Galama received a grant to develop their new film. In the short experimental documentary The Second Lily the stories surrounding two lilies, one endangered with extinction, the other a source of wealth potentially harming humans and nature, the mounting tensions in a rural community in Drenthe (The Netherlands) are followed. A mosaic of perspectives from different stakeholders, as well as performative interventions, weave a story about the entanglement of ecology, human diversity and the growing polarity between rural areas and cities.
Jori(k) moves between literature, fine arts, and documentary film. After a propaedeutic year in philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and finishing Image and Language at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, they were selected for the Slow Writing Lab by the Dutch Foundation for Literature. In 2021, they completed the Master of Artistic Research in and through Cinema at the Netherlands Film Academy (with distinction). Their fiction writing and art criticism have been published in De Revisor, Kluger Hans, De Internet Gids, Tirade, Tubelight, Metropolis M, in various artist’s publications. In 2022, they won the jury prize of the Flemish-Dutch erotic writing competition Het Rode Oor. Together with Natalia Sliwowska they are working on the feature-length documentary ‘Insurance Against Meteorites’, which won the HBO Max Award and the Encouragement Prize by the Documentary Association of Europe. In 2023, they were a guest curator for the Go Short Film Festival.
