Oma
Mónica Ruiz van Hattem received a grant to develop her new film called Oma. The film tells the story of Rotterdam's Mona. Trees do not actively intervene when threatened from their surroundings, but change themselves. Mona's Moluccan ancestors also seem to have adopted this survival strategy of doing violence to oneself. To what extent does Mona recognize the blueprint of the distant, colonial past, in her recent history?
Mónica is a documentary filmmaker born in Spain, based in Rotterdam. She won the Young Jury Prize at FIDBA Buenos Aires IDFF with her first film The Death of Don Quixote. In 2019, the short film Symphony of the Body was awarded a special mention at Fiver International Dance Film Festival. Displacement, exclusion and the desire for connection is her main working theme.
