Noem me bij mijn naam
Tami Ravid received a grant to develop a new documentary that follows Shanella and her process of permanently changing her surname, a legacy of her slavery past. To do so, she researches her roots, through a genealogy workshop, to find an appropriate new surname. In doing so, she changes the carryover of the past into the present, creating new opportunities for the future. But does any of your identity change when people now call you by your new name?
Since graduating from film school, Tami has alternated between documentary and fiction. Her most recent documentary IN HIS IMAGE (70 min, EO, production Witfilm) was selected for the IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary 2020 and aired prime time by EO in November 2020 as an IDFA premiere. In the field of fiction, Tami makes character studies, often using non-actors. The films are based on socially relevant themes, not infrequently about people living illegally, and are stylistically.
