Screenplay
Gvantsa Jgushia received a grant to develop Screenplay: a video installation inspired by The Veldt, a 1950s short story by Ray Bradbury. The project’s title reflects Jgushia’s artistic interest in a schematic depiction of premeditated or retrospective actions from an architectural perspective. Within this framework, the artist examines the material sensibilities of the ‘screen’ in its various tangible and intangible forms and explores the primordial mimetic phenomenon of ‘play’, both rudimentary and rich with socio-anthropological depth. Sculptural elements that explore [semi-]transparency will be integrated into an installation, hosting a composed single-channel video that revisits themes from Bradbury’s story, such as projection, aimless play, and an underlying sense of horror and humor.
Gvantsa is a visual artist and writer primarily focused on installation, sculpture, drawing, audiovisual, and text-based work. She is currently based in Amsterdam after completing a two-year residency at De Ateliers. Her research-driven practice investigates human behavior in relation to place, micro- and macro-traditions within local contexts, site-specificity, and the concept of inadequacy within temporal-spatial play. Rather than focusing on singular pieces, her practice centers on the accumulation of elements within organizational and quasi-archival systems. Drawing from principles of stage design, her work frequently results in multi-layered installations that incorporate individual sculptures, field-recorded sounds, image-based elements, and textual material.
